Rosalie Manor is committed to prevention of child abuse, child neglect, and teen pregnancy in Milwaukee County. The work of Rosalie Manor Community & Family Services began on May 26, 1908 when two Misericordia Sisters came to Milwaukee from Canada to open a home for unwed mothers. In addition to the maternity home, they opened a six bed maternity hospital, Misericordia Hospital. The hospital and home had a very good reputation and outgrew their space three times from 1908 to 1952. In 1965, an area wide planning committee decided that there were too many hospitals in the central city, and because Misericordia Hospital was the oldest, it was selected to close. The nearby communities of Elm Grove and Brookfield were seeking to build a community hospital, so the Misericordia Sisters moved to Brookfield and opened Elmbrook Hospital in 1969. Rosalie Manor, named for Rosalie Jette, the foundress of the Misericordia Sisters, was opened on the grounds of Elmbrook Hospital on July 28, 1969. Residents participated in activities such as art, piano, tennis, counseling and attended an "on grounds" school. The residential and outpatient program continued there until 1984, when Rosalie Manor moved to its current location in Milwaukee at 4803 W. Burleigh St. In 1996, the residence program was closed in light of changing community needs and the advent of new programs that would better serve unwed mothers. Between the years of 1983 and 2003, Rosalie Manor added several programs to meet the challenging needs of the community. The programs that are currently serving families include: Supporting Today’s Teen Parents (formerly Mother Care) began in 1983; Families United to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in 1986; and Today’s Dads in 2001. Until July 2005, Rosalie Manor also operated Supporting Today’s Parents which began in 1989. Due to changes in funding this program was closed. In 1994, the Misericordia Sisters transferred sponsorship of Rosalie Manor to the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters, and in 1998, we changed our name to Rosalie Manor Community & Family Services to better reflect our role as a social service agency. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee became the agency's sponsor in 2000. Today, we continue our role as a leader in the field of pregnancy and parenting services in the greater Milwaukee area. Most notably, in March 2005, First Lady Laura Bush visited Rosalie Manor to speak with fathers in our Today’s Dads program and to deliver a press conference on an initiative Helping America’s Youth. Mrs. Bush chose Rosalie Manor as the site of her press conference because she heard about our Today’s Dads program and its results in serving young fathers. She wanted to hear directly from participants as to what is helping them in their lives. In addition, she was interested in learning more about FUPTP and how youth are changing their lives through the program. |
