Families United to Prevent Teen Pregnancy: Growing Again

Last fall, Rosalie Manor was fortunate to receive a Federal grant in the amount of $187,020 which allowed us to expand Families United to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (FUPTP) into four additional Milwaukee Public Schools. FUPTP, which was implemented in Congress Elementary School in 1996, is now implemented in Milwaukee School of Languages, 38th Street School, Jackie Robinson Middle School, and Westside Academy.

The program is held Monday through Friday for two hours a day. Before the expansion, we had approximately 100 mentees in the fall and Congress components. Since the expansion, we have 256 participants. FUPTP is an abstinence-based pregnancy prevention program for youth between the ages of 9 and 15 years. Older youth, aged 15 to 20, are trained as mentors to act as role models and small group leaders.

FUPTP teaches values and the ability to make decisions and set goals, helps develop communication and social skills, builds an understanding of male and female reproductive anatomy and healthy relationships, and promotes self-awareness and high self-esteem. In addition to the school and fall components, FUPTP offers a summer program, which begins on June 22 and runs for seven weeks. For youth already enrolled in a school-based program, a special summer session will begin on June 29 and will run for four weeks.
